    [synopsis] => Los Zanj eran esclavos africanos obligados de trabajar en las tierras del Sur de Irak. Cuando se rebelaron, fueron juntados por los esclavos de las ciudades y de los pueblos vecinos. Su jefe, Alī ibn Muḥammad, era un hombre que tomó conciencia de su miseria y los prometió tierras y riquezas. Tuvo también el apoyo de algunas tribus árabes de la región.
